Understanding the Speaking Section
The speaking section is a face-to-face interview with a qualified examiner lasting 11-14 minutes, and is the only opportunity to demonstrate your oral skills directly.
Speaking Section Parts
Part 1 (4-5 minutes): Introduction and Familiar Topics
- Questions about yourself, family, work/studies
- Everyday topics like hobbies, food, and travel
- Direct questions requiring short answers
Part 2 (3-4 minutes): Individual Presentation
- Topic card with specific points to discuss
- One minute to prepare
- 1-2 minutes of continuous speaking
- Short follow-up questions
Part 3 (4-5 minutes): In-depth Discussion
- Abstract questions related to Part 2 topic
- Discussion of social and cultural issues
- Expressing opinions and analysis
Assessment Criteria
- Fluency and Coherence (25%): Speaking smoothly without excessive hesitation
- Vocabulary (25%): Using varied and appropriate vocabulary
- Grammar (25%): Using varied and accurate grammatical structures
- Pronunciation (25%): Clear pronunciation and natural intonation
Fluency Development Strategies
Before the Test:
- Practice speaking daily for 15-30 minutes
- Record yourself and listen for improvements needed
- Practice with a partner or teacher
- Read aloud to improve pronunciation
During the Test:
- Maintain eye contact and smile
- Use filler phrases when you need time to think
- Don't memorize prepared answers, be natural
- Ask for clarification if you don't understand the question
