Understanding the Writing Section
The writing section consists of two tasks to be completed in 60 minutes, and is one of the most challenging IELTS sections as it requires advanced skills in expression and organization.
Task 1 (20 minutes - 150 words)
Academic IELTS:
- Describe and analyze graphs, charts, tables, and maps
- Identify key trends and comparisons
- Use precise descriptive language
General Training IELTS:
- Write a formal or informal letter
- Explain a situation and request information or action
Task 2 (40 minutes - 250 words)
- Write an argumentative essay on a general topic
- Present a viewpoint supported by evidence
- Discuss different aspects of the topic
Assessment Criteria
- Task Response (25%): Answering all parts of the question
- Coherence and Cohesion (25%): Organizing and connecting ideas logically
- Vocabulary (25%): Using varied and accurate vocabulary
- Grammar and Accuracy (25%): Using varied grammatical structures
Success Strategies
For Task 1:
- Spend 2-3 minutes analyzing the data
- Write an introduction that paraphrases the question
- Organize information in logical paragraphs
- Use specific numbers and percentages
- Conclude with a summary of key trends
For Task 2:
- Plan your essay before starting (5 minutes)
- Write a clear introduction stating your position
- Develop each idea in a separate paragraph
- Use convincing examples and evidence
- Write a conclusion summarizing your position
Advanced Techniques
- Use a variety of grammatical structures
- Avoid repetition by using synonyms
- Use linking devices effectively
- Practice writing under time pressure
